Houston Chronicle, February 6, 2003:

Betty Bartsch died Wed., Feb. 5, 2003 after a long battle with advancing COPD. Born Betty Louise Frey to Anna Laura Taskey and Alfons Henry Frey November 4, 1923 in Seymour, Indiana. Married June 14, 1947 and for the next 55+ years to Eddie Alex Bartsch, Jr.

Survivors are husband; brother, William A. Frey and his sons, Derral and Loyd; sister, Nancy Ann and husband, Gerald Pottschmidt, and children Andrew, Chris and wife, Shelly, and their two children, Steve and wife, Beth, and their two children, Anna and husband, James Pratt, and their two children; five adopted children, Judith Kay and husband, Herbert Childs, and their three daughters, Wayne William and son, Larry Nierth and his wife, Vivian, Virginia, David Paul and wife, Rhonda, and two sons, Joel Alex and wife, Suzanne, and their three children; niece, Sally Ann and husband, Steve Foster, their two sons; and nephew, Eddie Bartsch with wife, Angela, who became a part of the family upon their mother's death.

Her life in Christ was one of love, care and service, not only to her family, but to many. An elementary grades teacher in various Lutheran Schools, she also served the congregation as Altar Care Chair and wrote a teaching manual for the work, Sunday School teacher, part time organist and pianist. As member of Lutheran Women's Missionary League at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, in 1997 she was honored as "Lutheran Woman of the Year" by Concordia University in Austin, TX.

As volunteer for the Red Cross, she taught canoeing, sailing, and swimming to kids and as a Water Safety Instructor, instructed lifeguards. She taught "a generation of Bellaire kids" to swim. For the Girl Scouts, her volunteer service was broad: Troop Leader, Chair of Conservation Committee, Calendar Coordinator, teaching conservation, campcrafts and outdoor skills to leaders, teaching swimming, canoing, and sailing to kids, chairing wild flower plantings in cooperation with the City of Houston, chairing tree plantings in cooperation with "Releaf Houston", directed two summer sessions of "Cadette Events" each attended by 1,000+ girls, received a 40 year Certificate and was awarded the Girl Scouts' highest honor, the "Thanks Badge" twice. Always interested in the outdoors and camping, she directed a number of children's summer camps at the Lutheran Camp Lone Star in La Grange, TX. Later, together with husband, changed it to a year around camp with broad age service.

As volunteer for the American Camping Association she was Texas Standards Chair, visited camps to certify them and trained other visitors to do the same, member of the national committee charged with upgrading the national ntandards, served as President of the Texas Section for two years, including hosting the National Convention in Houston, served on the Southern Region of Board of Directors and for only the second time in its history was awarded the Distinguished Service Award of the Texas Section. She served several years on the City of Bellaire's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. She was an avid birder. When husband's business was hit by recession, she took up selling Avon and won President's Club sales awards year after year for fifteen years. The Lord gave her considerable skills and heart and she shared them with all.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to American Lung Association, 2425 W. Loop S., Suite 330, Houston, 77027; or to the Building Fund of Pilgrim Lutheran Church; or to Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, 3110 SW Frwy, Houston, 77098.
