"Cecil Harp attended Bonita School and graduated in 1936. After a year at LSU, he worked in Texas until he was drafted into the army in 1940. Cecil received the Purple Heart for action at Manila under General MacArthur. He returned to Bonita in 1946 and went into partnership with his father, Daniel Robert Harp. Cecil married Virginia Frances Henderson who was born 29 Sep 1923 at Humble, Texas, the daughter of Zelia Mae (Hodges) and Joseph Perry Henderson." "Bartholomew's Song"

"Cecil Harp also remembered four [saloons] at an earlier time [in Bonita]. 'There were three churches and four saloons. A tornado came around 1950 [1951] and destroyed every church and never touched a saloon!' he said." page 132

"Cecil Harp caught a 12 foot, six inch alligator at Harp Brake. "It was ice and snow and I was walking over a floating log bridge when I saw one underneath the log with his mouth open. I went back land got a trace chain and put a loop in it and put it around his lower jaw. He clamped down on it and I tied him up. Three blacks came along and saw him. The next day he was killed and his tail was gone. I believe they came back and got his tail to eat." page 309

Trash in Bartholomew - page 354-356 "Cecil Harp summarized his view of the wholesale destruction of the bayou. 'When I came back here in 1946 it was still a beautiful place. There was always a lot of water, and the fishing was always good. The water was clear and there were no chemicals in it to kill the fish and turtles. They they logged too close to it and left scraps in it. Agricultural chemicals and too much irrigation messed it up.'"

SGT. CECIL D. HARP GETS BRONZE STAR
Mrs. Cecil Harp was informed recently that her husband, Staff Sgt. Cecil D. Harp, son of Mr. & Mrs. D. R. Harp of Bonita, has been awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding role in the Leyte Island Campaign. The letter which was written by Harp's commanding officer, Brigadier General Hugh Hoffman, is as follows:
"I recently have had the privilege of awarding your husband, Staff Sergeant Cecil D. Harp, Battery B, 61st Field Artillery Battalion, the Bronze Star Medal, which he earned for his splendid work in the Leyte Island Campaign.
"The decoration is bestowed on those whose achievements have been so heroic or meritorious during combat against the enemy of the United States, as to distinguish them above their comrades. In each case, the award is made by specific direction of the President.
"We are all very proud of such soldiers as your husband to the success of our country's armed forces in this area."

Harp has been in service overseas for the past 21 months and his wife, the former Virginia Henderson of Houston, Texas, and his son, Cecil,Jr., are visiting his parents in Bonita. Harp has never seen his son - Bonita Corres.
