Sam Aloi Sr., 86, of Farmington, died Saturday (June 25, 2011) at the John Manchin Sr. Health Care Center in Fairmont.
He was born Sept. 1, 1924, at Beech Bottom, a son of the late Nicholas Aloi and Grace Verdura Hervatin.
Sam was a carpet installer for many years, having retired from Wholesale Carpet Outlet. He began working for W.S. Thomas and then Bell's Furniture where he moved pianos and furniture, until he met and married his wife, the former Frances Manchin, at which time he went to work for Manchin's. He was a strong, hardworking man who enjoyed work and the people he worked for and around.
As a young man, he was a member of the CCC Camp in Preston County and once danced with Eleanor Roosevelt. He attended Rivesville High School, was a former councilman for the Town of Farmington, and a member of the St. Peter's Catholic Church in Farmington.
Sam enjoyed spending time with his family and sitting on his porch watching people pass by.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Kay Frances and Bob Schmidt Jr., Sam and Georgia Aloi Jr., all of Fairmont, Donna and Meline Serdich, and Donald and Diane Aloi, all of Farmington, and Michael and Sue Aloi of Buckhannon; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Tony Aloi Sr. and wife Carol, of Ohio; a sister, Mary Hervatin Boswell and husband Bob, of Maryland, sisters-in-law, Nancy Dick Hervatin of Florida, Mary Manchin and Stella Manchin, both of Farmington, Ann Manchin of Bridgeport; 30 nieces and nephews, including his godson, Sen. Joseph Manchin III.
In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Manchin Aloi; three brothers, Domenick and Joseph Aloi and Larry Hervatin; a sisterin- law and four brothers-in-law, Rose and George Levitsky, Joseph Manchin Jr., John Manchin Sr., and A. James Manchin.
The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice and the staff of John Manchin Sr. Health Care Center for their care and compassion during Sam's illness.
Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home, Route 250, Farmington, from 7 to 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at noon Tuesday with the Rev. Father Douglas B. Sutton officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his wife in the IOOF Cemetery at Farmington.
