During the Civil War, Jonathan served briefly in the Union Army's 197th Ohio Infantry. That unit was organized very near the end of the war, and apparently served in no combat role.
Jonathan was united in marriage on Jan. 18, 1872 to Mary Elizabeth (McCoy) Daniel. This marriage was blessed with 4 children (Elmer John Scott Daniel [born Oct 2, 1882], Albert Monroe Daniel [March 12, 1876], James Howard Daniel [Jan 4, 1878], and Arthur Mahlon Daniel [Oct 3, 1880]. Elmer was born in Harlem Springs, OH; the other 3 children were born in Maysville, MO. Mary died on October 18, 1881, in Maysville MO. She is buried in the Old Maysville Cemetary.
On Feb. 18, 1883 Jonathan married Rebecca E Daniel, a first cousin. Of this marriage, two children were born; Joshua Larkin Daniel [Sept. 26, 1885, Maysville, MO], and Sarah Eliza Daniel [Mar 8, 1887, Elk City, KS]. Rebecca died on Mar 8, 1887, and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City, KS.
On Jun 5, 1890, Jonathan married Cynthia Anne Kilgore in Cameron, MO. No children were born of this union. Cynthia died April 10, 1926, and is buried in the Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence, MO.
Jonathan died June 18, 1943.
