Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He enlisted in the 3rd New York Volunteer Cavalry after the Civil War began, and was commissioned as Captain and commander of Company A on July 17, 1861. Promoted to Major on May 22, 1862, he served in that rank for the next year. On June 11, 1863 he was transferred to the 21st New York Volunteer Infantry, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on September 18, 1863. He led his new regiment through the end of the war, sustaining a wound in the action at Ashby's Gap, Virginia on July 19, 1864. He was promoted to Colonel in November 1865, but was never mustered in at that rank. He was honorably mustered out on June 25, 1866 as a Lieutenant Colonel. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He settled in Chicago, Illinois, where he worked as a public works contractor.
