Berdena Arlene Maxwell, 81, of Derby died on May 8, 2011, in Newport.

She was born April 17, 1930, in Irasburg a daughter of Gilbert and Olive (Coapland) Macie.

On June 28, 1953, she married Gordon Victor Maxwell who predeceased her on June 28, 2006.

Mrs. Maxwell ran the candy counter at the former W.T. Grant Company in Newport. She also worked at the Coventry Store owned by Mildred Thayer, and she and her husband later purchased it. They owned and operated the Coventry Diner, and they also owned the first redemption center in the area. Her hobbies included going to yard sales, and playing bingo at the Derby Lions Club.

She is survived by two children: Barry Maxwell of Derby and Kimberly Choquette and her husband, Dennis, of Derby; by the following grandchildren: Ashley Hutchson and her husband, Eric, Lynsey Whipple, Ryan Whipple and his wife, Dana, Sean, Cody, and Jamie Maxwell, and Matthew and Derek Choquette; by several great-grandchildren; by a brother, Arland Macie, and his wife, Katherine, of Coventry and their children: Sue and Joseph Simpson, Deborah Cobb, Terry Macie, and Rick Macie; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Rhonda Whipple, and by a sister, Beverly Macie.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport with the Reverend Fred Barker officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from noon until the hour of the funeral. Interment will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Coventry Village Cemetery.
