US Senator. He served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. An 1781 graduate of Harvard University, he served as an Associate Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court from 1791 to 1795. He was then elected as a Federalist Senator from Vermont to the United States Senate, serving from 1895 until his resignation in 1801. He was the father of Vermont Governor Charles Paine.
