John served in WWI as a Mechanic in Co. H 130th Infantry. At some point during his assignment he was pulled & ordered to carry messages. Communications were down & he carried vital messages back & forth between units under heavy fire. Because of his efforts in helping to save a lot of men; he was nominated & was awarded a Silver Star. The details on his being awarded a Silver Star can be found documented in the following book: "Roll Call of Honor" published by the Shelby County Historical & Genealogical Society, Shelbyville, Illinois. The very old book is no longer available. But I understand a book is in the Shelby Co. Hist. & Gen. Soc. collections. Because of the fire in N.A.R.A. in the 1970's; his records where in the area that sustained the most damage; his records were lost. As a Veteran myself I can understand some of the trauma he & other men & women suffered from serving our country. John is a 1st Cousin 3 Times Removed and a Step-Grand Uncle to me. I'm honored by all the family members who came before me, during my time & are serving now.
