U.S. Congressman. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1869 and opened as law practice in Jerseyville, Illinois. He served as Sheriff of Jersey County, (1864-66), published the Jersey County Democrat, (1866-70) and was Jersey County clerk (1869-77). In addition, he was Mayor of Jerseyville, for two terms and State attorney of Calhoun County, (1888-1900). In 1901, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-seventh Congress, serving to 1903. After leaving Congress, he was again State attorney of Calhoun County and practiced law until his death.
