U.S. Congressman. He taught school in Maryland (1830-34), then moved to Ohio and taught school (1834-42). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1842 and commenced to practice law in Canton, Ohio. He was justice of the peace, Mayor of Canton, for ten years and a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives (1848-49). In 1855, he was elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth and reelected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1859. After leaving Congress, he practiced law until his death.
