US Senator. He served in the United States Senate from the state of Oregon from March 4, 1921 to March 3, 1927. He attended public schools and the State normal school at Weston, Oregon before his education was interrupted by the passing of his father in 1896. He left school afterwards and took over management of the Stanfield ranch from his mother. He would continue in ranching while also going into banking. He went on to serve in the Oregon state House of Representatives from 1913 to 1917 and served as speaker of this legislative body in 1917. In 1918, he made an unsuccessful run against incumbent Republican Senator Charles McNary in the party primary, but came back two years later to capture the party's nomination for Democratic Senator George E. Chamberlain's seat. He was successful in the general election in November of 1920 and served in the United States Senate for one term before losing his re-election battle in 1926. He was defeated by Frederick Steiwer in the Republican primary that year and then was unsuccessful as an independent candidate in the November general election. During his Senate tenure, he served as chairman of the Committee to Examine Branches of the Civil Service and also on the Committee on Public Lands and Surveys. After leaving the Senate, he made an unsuccessful run for the United States House of Representatives in 1928. He would later go back to his ranching and banking businesses after leaving "the political arena".
