MIDDLEBURY — Mrs. Christine (Attaya) Alix passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 16, 2011, at her home with her family beside her after a very brave life. She was the devoted wife of the late Joseph (Jack) Alix.
Chris was born in Picayune, Miss., the daughter of the late Saleem and Tameena (Naher) Attaya. She left Picayune after meeting and marrying Jack in 1946 to begin their life together in Pawtucket, R.I. An opportunity for work in Waterbury became available and they moved from Rhode Island to Connecticut in 1954. Together, they raised their six children and ran their successful business, Alix Shell Service, 311 West Main St., in Waterbury, retiring in 1983.
She is survived by her children: her daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Henry Gagain, with whom she made her home in Middlebury; her sons, Jay Alix of Michigan, and Mark Alix and daughter-in-law, Sukyoung, of Maryland; her daughters, Elizabeth (Betty) Gara of Arizona, Cecile Alix and her partner, Peter Cherubini, of Waterbury, and Katherine (Kathy) and son-in-law, Vince Bartolomucci, of California.
Additionally, Chris will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Natalie Russo, Christine Shugrue, Christine and Anika Alix, Lisa and Brian Alix, and Jonathan Bartolomucci; and her great-granddaughters, Danielle Russo, Virginia, Margaret and Juliet Shugrue, all who brought her unending joy daily. She also had the love of many "special children" of Pam Nole, Carl Breiner, Ericka Brayton, Susan Powers, and their respective families. Mrs. Alix is also survived by her sister, Vicki Spiers, and three brothers, Moses, James and Fred Attaya, all of Texas, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her three sisters, Freda Smith, Selma Hodges Smith and Sadie Rapp.
The funeral will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2011, from Maiorano Funeral Home, 95 Willow St., Waterbury, to Our Lady of Lourdes Church for Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends may call today at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m.
