Marcus was born Emandus Marcus Petersen (information via original birth records in Germany) on February 14, 1854 however the date on his headstone reads 1851. Through census it looks like upon coming to America Marcus dropped his first name and picked up Adolph as a middle name in honor of his father Marcus Adolph Petersen. He also started going by Mark. Which is probably how his headstone came to be written with Markus. But the year of his birth is a mystery.
His birth records are definitely the correct ones though as my grandmother knows for sure her Grandfather's parents were named Marcus Adolph and Catherine Maria.
