RALEIGH -- Mrs. Olive Pittman Worth , 98, of Wildwood Street, died Monday, July 11, 2005 at her home. Born on November 29, 1906 in Raleigh, Mrs. Worth was the oldest daughter of the late Joseph Carruthers Pittman and Ira Allen Pittman.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, David Crenshaw Worth , and her sister, Katherine L. Pittman of Raleigh.
She was raised and educated in Raleigh, graduating from Peace College in 1925, Meredith College with a BA in 1927, and received her master's degree from North Carolina State University. Raleigh has remained her lifetime home; and she has served it well. Olive Worth taught at Raleigh Junior High School and was on the original faculty at Broughton High School when it opened in 1929. She later taught English and Latin at Peace College from 1936-1942 and again in 1955.
She was very active in First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh at all levels serving as President of the Women of the Church (WOC), Sunday School teacher, long-time Chairman of the Memorials Committee, Circle Moderator, Bible Leader, Superintendent of the Junior (Sunday School) Department, and received WOC life membership awards locally and in the Presbytery where she held various positions as well. She also served on the board of Presbyterian Home in High Point. At Peace College, in addition to teaching, she served twice as Alumnae President and was the 1961 Distinguished Alumna, helped organize and served continuously on the Board of Visitors until 1986, on the Foundation Board for more than 40 years, and on the Board of Trustees. In 2000, she was awarded the William Peace Medallion for over 75 years of service to the school. She was still active as an Honorary Trustee at the date of her death. She was on the Board of the local Chapter of the American Red Cross for 27 years, acting as treasurer for seven years.
She was a member and past President of the Woman's Club of Raleigh and twice served as Chairman of that Board of Trustees. During her administration the Capital City Trails program was established. She was an honorary life member of both local and State Federation of Woman's Clubs (now GFWC-NC) and had served as State Treasurer.
She was a founding member of the Board of the Raleigh Museum, serving there for seven years. She was also active in the local Association of American University Women and served that organization as President.
Olive Worth was known for her wise leadership, hospitality and teaching ability. She taught many of the past and current leaders in Raleigh. She was a woman of strong faith who spoke her mind about issues of importance in her life: education, the Presbyterian Church, and family. She was described as a person "who knows the right thing to do at the right time-and she always does it never to busy to give you a warm smile and a helping hand." She was instrumental in keeping Peace College in Raleigh during the College's difficult days of the 1950s and courageously helped lead the legal battle which has allowed Peace College to reach the level it has today.
She is survived by: daughter, Olive Worth McCord of Greenville, SC; son, David Crenshaw Worth , Jr. of Raleigh; five grandchildren, Robert Worth McCord of Greenville, SC, David Donald McCord of Little River, SC, Dr. Dianne McCord Maughon of Midland, MI, Rev. Candace A. Worth (Harris) of Plymouth, NC, Sarah Worth O'Brien of Durham; five great-grandchildren, Kathleen McCord, Michelle McCord, Brittany McCord, Cory David McCord and Andrew Maughon; two sisters, (Mrs. Lindsay) Grace Pittman Smith of Elon, NC and (Mrs. Darnell) Mildred Pittman Whitt of Monterey, CA and Ocean Isle, NC.
The family will be at home on Wildwood Street for friends and family from 7 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2005.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2005.
The family will be in the Baucom Parlor following the service to greet worshipers and friends.
