Bernard A. Burton, 89 years of age, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life peacefully at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital on Saturday, June 11th, 2011.

Bernard was born in Naomi, Kentucky on January 26th, 1922 to the late Oscar Clayton Burton and the late Flonnie Smith Burton.

Bernard was a graduate of Nancy High School. Upon graduation he joined the United States Army to serve his country during World War II serving in the Company C, 14th Tank Battalion as tank commander having attained the rank of Sergeant. During World War II he served in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the following decorations and citations, EAMA Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart Medal, the Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Ribbon. When the war ended he was selected to attend Shrivenham American University, Shrivenham, England, taking courses in Animal Husbandry, Soil Conservation, and Fruit Production. Upon his return to the United States he enrolled and then graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Vocational Agriculture. After graduation he began his teaching career at the school from which he graduated, Nancy High School. Later he transferred to Pulaski County High School until he retired after a total of 34 ½ years. Under his guidance as a Vocation Agriculture teacher many young men won state and national awards for their projects in FFA (Future Farmers of America). He was selected to lead the "Kentucky Friendship Tour to Korea" taking a group of FFA students and farm equipment to rural South Korea during the summer of 1960. He was a volunteer with the local Boy Scouts Post No#82, an avid woodworker, loved gardening, growing flowers and spoiling his grandchildren. He was of the Baptist faith attending Oaklona Baptist Church of Naomi as a child, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Somerset.

Bernard was survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Katherine "Kay" Warren Hukill Burton, whom he married on April 21st, 1949, at the First Baptist Church of Lexington, Kentucky; two daughters, Mary Jane (and husband, John) Brown and Linda (and husband, Bruce) Jasper; two grandchildren, John II (and wife, Inace) Brown and Mary Katherine "Katie" Jasper (and husband, Dylan) Smith; one great-grandchild was expected in September of 2011 to John and Inace Brown; four sisters, Jewell (and the late Gene) Bramel, Montie (and the late Rev. Leon) Wesley, Lillian (and Tom) Morrow, Christine (and Ben) Shadoan; one brother, Arlen V. Burton; one sister-in-law, Dorothy (and the late John "Jay") Tackett; a special friend and loving caregiver, Beverly Stewart; and a host of other family and friends who mourn his passing.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Burton, who departed this life on August 20th, 1993 and Flonnie Burton, who departed this life on May 21st, 1985; two brothers, Glen Burton, who departed this life on July 9th, 1998 and Marlin Burton, who died in infancy on October 31st, 1933.

Visitations were held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15th, 2011 at the Pulaski Funeral Home in Somerset, Kentucky.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 16th, 2011 in the Chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home with William Adcock officiating.

Burial followed in the Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, Kentucky with full military honors.
