Born in Darmstadt, Germany, Matthias came to the United States in 1855 according to the 1910 census. He came through Pennsylvania. Then Matthias lived for a while in bottom land near the Missouri River near Belleville, IL. He suffered from malaria from the mosquitoes. He moved on Doctor's orders. He sold this rich farm land and moved to SW Missouri.

He went west on the train with his family, his farm implements and his animals. When he arrived in Pierce City he learned the land he had hoped to buy near Wentworth was sold. I was told he met a man at Buchner's in PC and he bought his land south of town on June 24, 1879. This was near Wilbert's farm on Capps creek. He had come to the states from Germany and spoke mostly German.

Children: Kate, Dora and Bertha lived to adulthood. Susan died at age 5.
