U.S. Congressman. While engaging as a crop planter, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1848 and commenced to practice law in Evergreen, Alabama. Entering politics, he was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives (1845-48), and solicitor for the second judicial circuit of Alabama (1850-55). In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving until he withdrew due to illness in 1861.
