Leonard "Gene" was a active member and past Officer and Vice-President of the Indianapolis American Postal Workers Union, Local, he was the Past President of the Indiana State American Postal Workers Union. He was inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame for Many years of service to the Indiana High School Athletic Association. He worked for the United States Postal Service in the capacity of Clerk and was a former Letter Carrier. He also drove cabs for the former Red Cab Company and for Yellow Cab of Indianapolis. He served in the United States Marine Corps, going such places as Camp Lejuene, and Okanawa, Japan.

He married Ethel Mae Mobley on June 21, 1958 in Hamilton County, IN. (Their marriage license was issued in Indianapolis, Marion County, IN).

Leonard Eugene was the son of Leonard Lee Goodwin and Gladys "Martha Jane" Scofield. He was their only son, but they divorced when he was very young. His mother remarried to Joe Bethel Nelson and they had three additional children: Cheryl Lee "Sherry", Samuel Joe, and Martha Jane "Marte".
