Jane Frances Cockings, highly respected resident of this vicinity for the past fifty years, passed away at her home in Waldwick Sunday, June 3rd, 192. Mrs. Cockings had been in poor health for some time, but an attack of pneumonia was the immediate cause of her death.
Janes Frances Harris, a daughter of John and Jerusha Harris, was born in Yellowstone, July 3rd, 1854, and passed from this life at the age of 68 years and eleven months. She lived at home with her parents until her marriage to N.H. Cockings which took place Dec. 22nd, 1875. To them, seven children were born, five of whom survive. They are: Mrs. John Skinner and Mrs. Chas. Gratton, Waldwick, Frank and Carl Cockings, Fayette, and Mrs. Carl Gant, Yellowstone. Besides the sorrowing husband and children, deceased leaves three sisters, Mrs. J.B. Reynolds, Mineral Point, Mrs. Fred Dawe of Brookfield, Mo., Melvina Harris of Yellowstone, and two brothers, J.H. Harris of Waldwick and Geo. F. Harris of Los Angeles, Cal. There are seven grandchildren, more distant relatives and hosts of friends who mourn with the family, the loss of a loved one.
Mrs. Cockings was a member of the Waldwick ME church, having affiliated with that church in early childhood. She remained a staunch member thru life, being a member of the Ladies Aid and Teacher of the Adult Bible Class in the Sunday School. She was a real friend to all with whom she came in contact. May this same Christian mantle of faith be transmitted to her children, that they may fully realize that "Blessed are those who die in the Lord."
Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon, June 7th, at 2 pm at the Waldwick ME church by Rev. Supplee. Six nephews acted as pallbearers: Volney and Orville Whitford, Willis and Richard Harris, Wilmerth Ching and Bert Steavens. Misses May Uren, Lucile Harris, Lucile Steavens, Velma and Rella Ferrell and Florence Harris, grandnieces of Mrs. Cockings were flower girls. The body was laid to rest in the County Line Cemetery.
Out of town people attending the funeral of Mrs. Cockings were: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dawe, Brookfield, Mo., Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Reynolds of Mineral Point, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Harris, Mr. and Mrs. George Harris, Mrs. John Howe and Mrs. Kislingbury, Mineral Point, and Mr. and Mrs. Will Penniston of Darlington.
