In the death of Newton H. Cockings, Waldwick community loses one of its most highly esteemed citizens. He was the son of John and Margaret Cockings. He was born on the Cockings homestead in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, March 30, 1853. He died in Waldwick Township, Iowa county, Wisconsin, March 10, 1925, at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 10 days. It was not known that he was very seriously ill until recently, and his end came rather unexpected.
On Dec. 22, 1875, he was united in marriage to Jane Harris, of Waldwick. To this union were born seven children; three daughters, Mrs. John Skinner of Lafayette County, Mrs. Charles Gratton of Waldwick, Mrs. Carl Gant near Yellowstone; two sons, Frank and Carl, residing on the old homesteads.
Our subject lived on the farm where he was born until 10 years ago, when he, with his wife, retired in the village of Waldwick. On June 3rd, 1923, the wife and mother, was taken into the great beyond.
Mr. Cockings united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, September 18, 1878. He was a member until his death. He joined the Modern Woodmen yet, Lafayette County, December 29, 1894. Later he was transferred to the Waldwick camp. He was a loyal Woodman and held important offices from time-to-time. He served well in other public offices. He was a kind neighbor, loved by young and old.
He leaves to mourn his departure other than the children, three sisters, Mrs. Robert Nicholas and Mrs. Charles Martin of Granville, North Dakota, and Mrs. Sarah Heath of Waldwick; besides a large number of nieces and nephews and other relatives, besides a host of friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 12, from the Waldwick church, Rev. A.E. Weittenhiller officiating. Interment was made at the County Line Cemetery.
