Gladys E. Bunker, 97, died June 7, 2011, at Columbine Manor Care Center in Salida with her son and daughter at her bedside.

She was born Aug. 31, 1913, in Salida to Victor E. and Ruth Anna Anderson and spent her young years growing up on a ranch at Alder Creek at the northern end of the San Luis Valley.

While in high school she moved to Cañon City and graduated in 1931. She attended nursing school at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.

She married Boyd E. Bunker and worked as a rancher's wife, hay camp cook, and as a school bus driver and lunchroom cook in Moffat.

After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bunker worked at the Longfellow Elementary School lunchroom in Salida, where she prepared home-cooked meals for hundreds of school children.

In 1978 she retired and devoted her time to fishing, gardening, horseback riding and cooking at the Salida Senior Center.

Friends and family remember Mrs. Bunker as a giving, caring woman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Harold (Buckskin) Anderson; sister, Thelma Branch; and granddaughter Tammi Bunker.

Survivors include her children, Leroy (Beverly) Bunker of Woodland Park and Toy (Bob) Jackson of British Columbia, Canada; grandchildren, Shane (Barbie) Bunker of Monument, Jim (Victoria) Bunker of Medford, Ore., Terri (Eric) Svendsen of Flemington, N.J., and Shilo, Tiana and Shawn Jackson of Tomslake, British Columbia, Canada; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Graveside memorial services will be at 2 p.m. June 18, 2011, at Rito Alto Cemetery in Moffat.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Society in care of Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home, Salida.
