Born in Lansing, Michigan, he was dubbed ‘The Sheik' for his Arabian costumes, plus noted for his hardcore escalated violence and commercial appeal of professional wrestling in the early years of television. After serving in the US Army during World War II, he started out wrestling in the Midwest and soon became one of professional wrestling's biggest box office attractions in the 1950s. In the late 1960s, he also wrestled regularly in Canada where he was undefeated for 127 matches going into the early 1970s. Later in the 1970s, he went to Japan where he jumped into All-Pro Japan Wrestling and wrestled for various independent promotions throughout the United States and Japan through the 1980s. During the 1990s, he mainly wrestled in Japan in Martial-Arts matches, had a brief run in Extreme Championship Wrestling in 1994 and wrestled his last match in Japan before retiring in 1998. He died of heart failure at age 78 in Williamston, Michigan and was inducted into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2007.
