Russell Earl Mentzer, 75, of Shade Gap, died Thursday, September 30, 1971, at 10:45 a.m. in the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. He had been a patient for four days. He was born January 22, 1896, in Langdondale, Bedford County, a son of Jerry W. and Irene Shore Mentzer. He married Olive Blanche Gutshall on June 5, 1915 at a ceremony performed in the bride's home in Cromwell Township by the Rev. Cline of the Methodist Church. Surviving are these children: Mrs. Alfred (Ruth) Kyler, Mapleton Depot, R.D.; Mrs. Esther Walls Wagner, Lewistown, R.D. 2; Mrs. Herbert (Helen) Mellott, York; Earl L. Mentzer, Cassville; Blaine A. Mentzer, Mill Creek; Jerry H. Mentzer, Okinawa; Miss Grace M. Mentzer, Shade Gap; Sgt. Merrill C. Mentzer in the U.S. Air Force at Chinute AFB in IL; Mrs. Donald Flo Scott, Mount Union R.D.; and Dale E. Mentzer, Wilmington, Del. Three children preceded in death. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Gertrude Naugle, Fort Littleton; David Mentzer, Warren Mentzer, Mrs. Irene Hall, and Mrs. Goldie Waters, all of Burnt Cabins, R.D. Mrs. Fannie MacMillan, Lorain, Ohio, and Mrs. Mary Staubs and Fred Mentzer, both of Mount Union. Twenty-nine grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren are surviving. The deceased was a member of the United Methodist Church of Shade Gap. Mr Mentzer worked at Harbison-Walker Refractories Corp. of Mount Union until his retirement in 1952. Interment will be made in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Shade Gap. R.D.
