Bernice Jones was born during a time of unjust discrimination and depression as the third of five children in the marriage between Matthew Hooks and Nettie Winslett in Tatums, Oklahoma.

Bernice accepted Christ as her personal Savior in childhood and attended church at Bethel Baptist Church. She began school very young and graduated at Tatums High School in 1949 at 16 years old. Thereafter she attended and graduated from Langston University in 1953 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics. She later received a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Central State University, Edmond, Oklahoma in the early 1970s. Bernice had four great loves: she loved The Lord, she loved teaching, she loved her children, and she loved Clarence! She married her lifelong friend and soul mate, Clarence “CJ” Jones, Jr. in August 1956. Together they had three children. The Jones family lived in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Clarence and Bernice were in-separable and he preceded her in glory by a mere 9 months. The two were married by the late Pastor JB Bratton and united first with Fifth Street Baptist Church, then Emmanuel Baptist Church. In 2001, CJ and Bernice moved back to their hometown, Tatums, Oklahoma where they lived out the rest of their spirit-filled lives. One interesting fact about Bernice’s career is that, because of prejudices of the time, she worked as a maid for 13 years after graduating from college; however, perseverance prevailed and she began teaching first in Catholic Schools and then in the Oklahoma City Public Schools in the late 1960s. Mrs. Jones’ career was filled with teaching all races, creeds, and ages; she was known for teaching those who had been labeled “unteachable”. Mrs. Jones’ bold, outspoken manner of teaching was effective and unmistakable. She was a strong Sunday School teacher for many years and loved the fact that so many of her Sunday School students grew up to become ministers, preachers, and pastors. She had a long career of answering prayer lines for TBN and missionary support in Jamaica, Kenya, Sudan, Russia, Israel, and all over the United States. Today, we celebrate her life because we know she lives in Heaven. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Karen; sister, Lacy; brother Matthew; husband, CJ; and many relatives and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory: son, Larnell Dewayne Jones; daughter, Myrna Roberts; son-in-law, Emmett Roberts; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Johnson-Jones; grandchildren Ramalle Meadows (whom she raised), Rodnei Griffin, Ashley Sinclair-Roberts, Blaize Jones; great-grandchildren, Javion and Serinady Meadows and their mother, Melody Alexander; all of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sisters, Betty Davis of Lawton, Oklahoma and Mary Stevens of Los Angeles, California; brother, Rudolph Hooks of Tatums; brother-in-law, Cecil Jones of Tatums, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Nina King of Kansas City, Missouri and Billie Hardeman of Minneapolis, Minnesota; many nieces, nephews and a host of cousins, as well as many very special friends.
