Businessman. One of the three operators of the firm Russell, Majors & Waddell, that founded and operated the Pony Express. Note: Date of death varies on stone marker and bronze marker. Stone says April 7, while bronze says April 1. I'm guessing stone marker is more accurate since the bronze marker was placed there 100 years later. John Taylor Waddell was the father of William B. Waddell, and purchased a small tract of land for a family cemetery in 1836. John Waddell died in 1839, and was the first person buried in the cemetery. His son William B. Waddell donated adjacent land to the family cemetery, and it was incorporatd as Machpelah Cemetery by a special act of the Missouri Legislature in 1849. There have been several other additions to the cemetery since.
