In 1795, Captain Charles Wadsworth, eldest son of General Peleg Wadsworth, settled at Hiram in Oxford County, Maine. He was appointed one of the first Captains of the local militia and he held several town offices. Charles' father gave him a mansion on 500 acres in Hiram, and that is where he lived with his first wife, Ruth, and after she died, with his second wife, Jane. Initially Charles and Ruth were buried on their property, in what is known as the Wadsworth-Barnes Cemetery. Later both were disinterred and re-buried in the Hiram Village Cemetery. A marker in memory of Charles' second wife, Jane, sits beside those of Charles and Ruth. Charles died at the age of 72, leaving behind a large family.
