She was the granddaughter of Joseph Washington Henderson Bates (1828-1871)and Sarah Jane Thompson (832-1887), and the granddaughter of William D.Y. Davis (1835-1900) and Sarah Jane Cole (B. 1840). Adell had two brothers, Ollie Lee Bates born in 1902 and Alvin Bates born about 1906. She had two sisters, Mazie Bates born about 1909 and Dorris Nell Bates born about 1918. Billie and Lou and all the children were born in Texas. Adell married William Walter Petty, son of Palmer Wood and Effie Thomas Petty. They had two boys, Kenneth M. Petty born in 1936 and William Glenn Petty born in 1940.
