Elizabeth was born in the dairy farmers village of Sonnega, located in the southern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland and she is the second of seven children and also the second of three daughters, named for her paternal grandmother Elisabeth Hendriks Haven. In app. 1893 (?) she immigrated to the Platte area in South Dakota, Charles Mix County. Her parents and all her siblings went there already in April 1893.
Elizabeth married on February 13, 1899 to Henry Oldekamp at Nieveen, a small Dutch settlement about 9 miles southwest of Platte. Her brother Albert Groen married on the same date and place. They adopted one daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Groen, a daughter of her brother Joseph (Joe) Groen.
In July 1930 her husband Henry J. Oldekamp died. From 1936 she shared her home near Platte with her brother Albert J. Groen (1871-1963), a widower too, for nearly 25 years.
