John married Nora Dinwiddie March 1, 1883, Dadeville, Dade County, MO, at the home of the bride's father. The parents of two children, they own 240 acres, and reside on the family homestead with John's parents and assist with their 350 acre farm, according to Goodspeeds Biographies of Dade County, Missouri c.1889.

The children of John in the 1900 Dade County, MO census are Robert b 1883, Mina b.1887, and Walter b.1892.

From the Greenfield Vedette, March16, 1939 --
John A Cowan, son of Margaret E and Robert Cowan was born April 24, 1858. He was born on the farm four miles northeast of Dadeville, which his father settled, and lived there his entire life, 81 years, 10 months, and 10 days.
After many months of suffering, he departed from this life March 6, 1939. Sometimes it seemed his suffering was almost beyond human endurance, yet he was patient, thinking of those about him, never wishing to be a burden on the ones who were dear to him.
He married on March 1, 1883 to Nora Dinwiddie, who died at the early age of 28. To this union three children were born, Dr. RD Cowan, Aurora, MO; Mrs. BB Alder, Cane Hill, MO and Walter N, who passed away December 22 of last year.
Uncle John, as he was called by everyone who knew him, was a beloved and respected citizen, a true friend and neighbor, a kind and loving father.
Surely it would not be right to wish one so frail to continue this earthly journey. Yet we are never ready to give up one so dear, the old home can never be the same without him. There are also five grandchildren, besides many nieces and nephews to mourn his passing. May they all become the same honest, upright citizens that this man has been.
