Born in Cumberland, Maryland, Barbara grew up in Fairhaven, Mass., where she attended the Washington St. School and the Rogers Elementary School. She was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, class of 1946, where she was a member of the field hockey team. She then attended the Kinyon-Campbell Business School in New Bedford for bookkeeping & secretarial studies. Barbara was employed as a bookkeeper for a local plumbing & heating contractor. She was also a stay-at-home mother for many years.

Barbara was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and a Fairhaven town meeting member. She also had a deep love and appreciation of classical music and opera and enjoyed listening to the radio broadcasts of the Boston Pops and Boston Symphony Orchestras. She owned a large collection of opera and classical recordings. She also enjoyed the handicrafts of sewing, knitting, and embroidery. She would often take night classes at New Bedford Voke to learn a new craft.

In 1973, at age 44, Barbara passed away from breast cancer, leaving behind her husband, Frank, and her seven children.

She was the daughter of Stewart Harley Gilston and Ellen Dorothy (McCracken) Gilston, both of whom predeceased her.

Barbara was the granddaughter of Louis C. and Ellen D. (Waters) McCracken of Fairhaven, Mass. She grew up in their home at 89 Centre St. surrounded by her mother, aunts, cousins, and her cherished dog, Sandy.

She was also the granddaughter of John W. and Gertrude I. (Jackson) Gilston of New Bedford, Mass.
