J. Jones Bates, 69, Terreton resident, World War II veteran, and retired heavy equipment operator, died in Idaho Falls, April 6, 1984, of emphysema.

He was born August 15, 1915 in Rigby to John Stephen and Ida Florence Jones Bates. He married Ruby Cole December 26, 1940 in Rigby. The marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

He served during World War II in the Pacific with Company F of the 116th Engineers Reconnaissance of the 141st Division and was a member of the Rigby Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1004.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator with the Operating Engineers #370 and retired in the Hamer area.
He was a member of the LDS Church.

He is survived by his wife of Terreton, two sons, Ronald J. Bates, Salt Lake City, Zay Stephen Bates, Grand Junction, Colorado, one daughter, Mrs. John (Tina Jo) Housholden, Cayon Country, California; two brothers Veral V. Bates and Alvin B. Bates, both of Rigby, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday at the Eckersell Memorial Chapel with Wade Yearsley officiating. Burial will be in the Annis Little Butte Cemetery.
