Clark Cleveland was the son on Moses Cleveland and Tabitha Spencer.

Clark, an Ohio pioneer, was a farmer and mason. He served in the War of 1812. Clark married Jemima Downing in 1789. Clark and Jemima had children: Abigail, Kesiah, Moses, Mary, Sarah, Clark, Elizabeth, James, and Abel.

They buried Clark on a knoll at Hamers Corners where a cemetery had been made, and placed a stone on his grave. After the Civil War, a committee was appointed to select a site in the cemetery for the monument to General James McPherson and they came to James Cleveland for permission to remove the grave of his father to make way for the monument. James refused permission stating that there were only bones to be moved, and the General would be the last man in the world to permit such a thing. So there they lie, 50 feet apart in the McPherson Cemetery at Clyde, the General and the Private.
