Irene Walling Harper, 87, daughter of the late Olier (Morris) and Willie Alvie Walling, Sr., was born August 8, 1923, in Elkhart, Texas. She passed away peacefully Saturday, May 28, 2011, in a local hospice facility.
Mrs. Harper had been a school teacher in West Columbia, Conroe, and New Caney, TX and was secretary in various departments of Angelina College, where she served as secretary to the Dean of Instruction for 15 years before retiring. She enjoyed being with her family, especially her granddaughter and great-grandchildren. She loved to read and do word find puzzles, enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking and working in the yard during her healthier years.
Survivors include her daughter, Gloria Gregory; granddaughter and husband, Jeré and Paul Johnson; great-grandsons, Daniel, Philip and David; sister, Olivia Miller, all of Lufkin; sisters-in-law, Geneva Walling and Flora McMillian, of Huntsville; and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Olier and Willie Walling, Sr.; husband, R. C. Harper; brother, W. A. Walling, Jr.; brother-in-law, Calvin Miller.
Pallbearers will be Tommy McMillian, Willie McMillian, Ronnie Walling and Paul Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 116 S. Raguet, Lufkin, TX 75904, or the charity of your choice.
Services for Mrs. Harper will be held at Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with visitation Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. in the Adickes Addition of Oakwood Cemetery, Huntsville, TX.
