Mayme Arteman was born Mary Elizabeth Culligan on March 25, 1904, to John J. and Margaret Ann (O'Dowd) Culligan in Independence Iowa. She moved to Huron with her parents in 1909, and attented Huron schools graduating from Huron High School in 1921. She taught in rural Beadle County Schools for several years.
On February 18, 1933, Mayme married Edwin Arteman at St Martin's Church in Huron.

Mayme's hobbies were painting and writing. In 1984 Mayme complied and wrote the one hundred year history of the Catholic Church in Huron. Since 1952 many of her writings have been published.
