Timothy Whiting Bancroft graduated from Brown in 1859 with a Bachelor's and a Master of Arts degree. Within ten years, he was made a professor of rhetoric and English literature at his alma mater, a position he retained for the rest of his life. In 1884 he authored a book entitled, Method of English Composition.

Bancroft's portrait was painted in 1902 by Frederick Porter Vinton, a Boston artist who was at his best as a painter of men. He copied Bancroft's likeness from a photograph. Sarah Antoinette Bancroft and other relatives of the professor gave the portrait to Brown the year it was executed.
