Born in a log house built in 1814 by her mother's maternal uncles, Lyde was the third child and second daughter of George Boyd and Eliza Vail Markee. She married Albert Magee Billingsley at the Sherman House Hotel in New Philadelphia on March 22, 1883. (He had been her teacher in the common school at Tippecanoe.) Lyde was the mother of Wayland DeForest, Paul Raymond, Harry Esmond, and Ruth Virginia (Arnold). Because her husband was a Methodist minister, she lived in Wetmore, Kansas; Evanston, Illinois; Youngstown, Ohio; Cornell, Iowa and finally Cedar Falls, Iowa. Lyde was on a visit to her family in Ohio and died in her sleep at her brother Albert's home - the house in which she had been born. Her body was taken by train back to Iowa for burial. She was a member of the DAR through her maternal great grandfather, William Markee (Find A Grave #6659340). NB: Lyde's middle name, an ancestral name, was VALE at her birth. She chose to use VAIL like her mother.
