Barber Cone was born January 10, 1803 in Bulloch County, Georgia, to Aaron Cone, Sr. and Susannah Hannah Marlow Cone. On December 20, 1832 he married Eliza Slater Cone, and they had six children: William Barber Cone, America Ann Cone McElveen, Aaron Jackson Cone, John Slater Cone, Paul Robert Cone, and Georgia Ann Cone Brewer. Both John and Paul died on June 10, 1862 as Confederate soldiers defending James Island near Charleston, South Carolina. After Barber's first wife's death, Barber married Martha Beasley Cone. He died March 16, 1886 at age 83 and is buried at Old Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery in Bulloch County.
