Nelson's mother was Maria Cardoza Santos, (1878-1933), originally from Pico Island, Azores. She immigrated to America in 1900 (census record); and married in 1907, New Bedford, Bristol Co, Massachusetts. She was a housewife and dressmaker. Her two children were both born in California- Mary "Mamie" in San Jose, CA and Nelson Philip in Hollister., CA. Maria preferred Massachusetts to California, so they returned there before her death 28 December 1933 at their home: 46 Rutland Street. She was buried in New Bedford probably in St. John's Cemetery.

Step-Mother: 2nd wife: Mary C Bateh, (1897-1993). She was born in the Azores and died in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California. She and her husband Philip Cardoza FONSECA are buried at Oak Hill Memorial Cemetery in San Jose in a plot in Rose Lawn section.

Survivor of Bataan Death March. Nelson was one of 513 men rescued and liberated during a daring raid by the 6th U. S. Army Rangers in January of 1945. He was held in Prison Camp No. 1 Luzon Island, in the Philippines.
He later served in Korea.
