Dennis Marion Johnson was born July 25, 1943, in Red Oak, Iowa, to Dorothy (Nelson) and Marion Johnson. Dennis passed away suddenly at his home on Sunday evening, May 22, 2011, at the age of 67.

Dennis began his school years at a country school just down the road from his boyhood home and was the last student to graduate from the 8th grade before the school was closed. He attended Clarinda High School where he enjoyed playing basketball and football. He graduated with the Class of 1961 and was looking forward to attending his 50th class reunion in June.

Dennis continued his education at Clarinda Community College and earned his Associate of Science Degree then attended Iowa State for one year where he majored in aeronautical engineering, until his love of farming brought him back home.

He was drafted into the United States Army in 1965. Dennis went for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and advanced training at Fort Sill, Okla., before being sent to Germany for 18 months as an artillery surveyor.

After his two years in the army, Dennis returned to his home place and started a farrow to finish hog operation in 1967. He received an Iowa Master Pork Producer award in 1990. Dennis was still very active on the farm raising hogs, corn, and soybeans. He loved farm life and had made no plans for retirement.

On September 9, 1973, Dennis was united in marriage to Margaret DeVries Duffield at the Bethesda Lutheran Church where he was a lifetime member and enjoyed attending with his wife. Dennis and Margaret shared many life views and had a happy life together on the farm for over 37 years.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law Ella Deane Ferber and brother-in-law James DeVries.
