Sgt. William S. Woods was born in Orange Co., N.C. on Dec. 1, 1831. His family moved to the town of Marion, in Perry Co., Alabama, when he was a teenager. When the war began, Woods was living in Selma, Ala. He was apparently a widower with a young son whom he had left in the care of a female friend. On Sept. 11, 1861, he enlisted in Company B of the 20th Alabama.

The 20th Alabama saw it's first action with General Kirby Smith's and his invasion of central Ky, The Battle of Richmond, Ky. After Perryville the 20th joined General Bragg's command. Early in 1863 they were transferred to the defenses of Vicksburg and participated in the Confederate loss at Champions Hill.

In June of 1864 lieutyenant William Samuel Woods was killed in battle at Marietta, Georgia.
