Jacob and his brother John were both in the
36th Iowa Infantry and were captured along with most of the regiment at the
Battle of Marks' Mills, Arkansas, on April 25, 1864. The prisoners were taken
to the Camp Ford POW camp northeast of Tyler, Texas. John Breon died on
September 19, 1864, and Jacob died on August 25, 1864. They were originally
buried in the prison cemetery. In about 1867, the Quartermaster Department
supervised the reinterral of the deceased prisoners to the National Cemetery at
Pineville, Louisiana, which is across the Red River from Alexandria, La.. Jacob
is buried in Plot A-1063, and John is buried in Plot A-1033.
