Rarely has an event so startled and saddened the entire community as the unexpected death of this gifted young lady which occurred at Duluth on Sunday afternoon last, Dec. 22. Miss Abbott was the youngest daughter of Lieut. A. T. Abbott, the military commandant of Shattuck School. She went to Duluth with her sister, Miss Nellie Abbott, about three weeks ago, to attend the wedding of their brother, Mr. Howard Abbott. While there, Miss Caroline was attacked with typhoid fever, which is said to have assumed an epidemic form in that city. Although her condition was considered to be serious, no immediate alarm was felt, and the telegram announcing her death came with the suddenness of and awful and unheralded calamity upon her deeply afflicted parents, whose home she had left in the flush of health and beauty so short a time previously. Miss Nellie Abbott came home immediately after the wedding and a few days after her arrival was seized with the same disease from which she now lies on a dangerous condition. The afflicted parents have the deep sympathy of everyone, for beautiful in mind and person, and sweet and sunny in her nature, the daughter whom they have lost was a favorite with all. She was gifted in many ways. As a charming actress, she was the star of many an amateur performance, but above all, she was possessed of an exquisite voice. She sang with perfect art, for she had a noble ambition to excel in that direction and had studied under the finest teachers in Boston. She used her talents generously for her friends, and was indeed a social queen who will be mourned and missed by all.
Miss Abbott was born at Fortress Monroe, Va., and was 23 years of age. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Chapel, Shattuck School, Rev. Dr. Dobbin and Rev. Dr. Tanner officiating. Beautiful roses were used in profusion and the music was rendered by a quartet choir, composed of Mesdames Whitney and Ehle and Messrs. Luther and Pease. The bearers were Messrs. Henry Scandrett, S. Crossett, James R. Smith and Arthur Gardner. The body was deposited in the vault at Maple Lawn Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Abbott, Mr. Edward Wallbank, at whose house Miss Abbott died, and Dr. Bowers, all of Duluth, were present at the funeral.
