LIBERTY,IND.-Esther Bernice Abernathy,age 89,of Liberty,passed away on Friday morning May 13, 2011 at Syacmore Springs in Liberty.

Esther was born on Sept. 28,1921,in Kichel,Ind., the daughter of Glenn Ware and Jeannette (Craddock)Jerome. She is a graduate of Short High School.

Since 1946,she had been a member of the Union County Extension Homemakers where she served as president for five terms. She also was a member of the councit for the Extension Homemakers for 20 years and served one year on the state membership committee. During World War II,Bernice had worked as a welder. For many years she had worked at Hahn Jewelry in Liberty as well as being the manager of the Union County License Branch for several years.

On March 2,1940,in Liberty,she became the bride of Ellis Dale Abernathy. Mr. Abernathy passed away in January 2010.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Joy Abernathy and Barry and Pam Abernathy all of Liberty;three sisters,Carolyn Beach of Columbus,OH.,Glenna Selby of Richmond, IN.,and Mary Alice Adams of Davis,Ill.;four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Private family funeral services will be held at Urban Winkler Funeral Home with Pastor David Fields of Mount Pleasant Community Church officiating. Burial will be at Westpoint Cemetery in Liberty.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Union County Public Library or the Union County Extension Homemakers.
