RICHLANDS NC - Dorothy Lawson Mattocks Humphrey VonCannon, 96, of Richlands, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 20, 1914, in Onslow County and graduated from Dixon High School in 1931. She received a teaching degree from East Carolina University in 1935. Mrs. VonCannon taught school in Onslow and Duplin Counties for 30 years. She was past president of the United Daughters of The Confederacy, past regent of American Daughters of The Revolution, member of the Retired Teachers' Organization, member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, past member of the Onslow Homemakers and active member of the Richlands United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Ray Humphrey and Luther Paul VonCannon; brothers, Philip Mattocks and Theodore (Bud) Mattocks.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 13, 2011, at Richlands United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stan Brown and Billy Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at Onslow Memorial Park.

Mrs. VonCannon is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Ward Hack and husband Bruce of Gainesville, Va., Jean Ray Nicholson and husband Douglas of Topsail Beach and Susan Mattocks Hoggard and husband Robert of Merry Hill; stepdaughter, Ann Redmond of Dunn; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and six stepgrandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. on Friday at Richlands United Methodist Church.

Flowers are welcome, or memorials may be made to the Richlands United Methodist Church, 101 East Hargett St., Richlands, NC 28574.
