Gladys Irene Bishop known to all as Susie or Tracy
She was the daughter of Mary Lydia Powers (1915-1959)
and Joseph Thomas Bishop (1913-1982)
He lived in the Oakland California area, on Oak Knoll Avenue in the 1950-1960's.
Susie went to Rolando Park Elementary School in the College Park area of San Diego and went on to La Mesa Jr. High. She was attending Will C Crawford High School in San Diego when her mother passed away in May of 1959. She tried to live for a short time at the home of her maternal grandmother Mary Ellen English. She was sent to a convent school and things were very difficult for Susie. She spent many years in Ocean Beach and loved everything it had to offer.
Cremated, her ashes were divided amongst her 6 children, Kelly, Brandy, Baron, Summer, Binah and Joe. She died of cancer as did her mother before her. Her passion in life besides her children was Ocean Beach California. She also leaves behind a sister Mary Lou McCormick and family, brother John McDonald and family and her uncle Michael Frank English.
She was 5' 4", had red hair, green eyes and was right handed.

I was 3 1/2 years old when Susie was born, our mom had just lost her son Donald the Sept before Susie was born and was unable to care for us...in fact she was unable to bring Susie home from the hospital. Our mom was living at 4032 Orange Ave San Diego Ca at the time, (no idea where Tom Bishop was) a family friend known only to me as Ma Schaffer took Susie home with her, when Susie found this out years later it was very rough on her mentally. She had expressed to me years later that she felt she just wasn't wanted, especially since her father wasn't in her life hardly at all.
This couldn't be farther from the truth as she was the apple of our grandmother's eye Mary Ellen English, Nannie to us..she loved Susie when she was younger with a love I always envied, jealous really as this same grandmother disliked me simple because of my father. And I know that mom loved us...Loved Susie...
Susie was brought home, not sure how long after her birth, we really didn't live with our mom until Susie was about 4 years old. Our mom had to work and we lived a lot of the time with the Reuben Henry Rabon & Gladys Rabon family. There were already 6 daughters in this family but Aunt Gladys took us in and loved us like her own. We would visit our mother on the weekends. I remember taking 2 train trips up to Oakland to see Tom and Irene Bishop, Irene being Tom's wife. She was very welcoming and we always had a good time there. Irene played the harp.
I said earlier that Susie was about 4 when we started living with our mom full time but I can only base this on me going to 2nd grade at Central Elementary School on Central and University Ave. Not sure why this time line would make sense, since I believe mom worked until she married George McDonald and I don't think that happened until 1949. Maybe he moved in with us before they married. Susie would have been 6 then in 1949...we finally left Orange Ave in 1950 when our brother John was born and we moved into Navy Housing and then in 1951 we moved to 6412 Celia Vista Drive San Diego, things were "normal" for a few years.
Note here on 4032 Orange Avenue, it was a one bedroom duplex..One bedroom and there were 5 of us, there was a set of bunk beds and a double bed and John's bassinet in that one bedroom!! There was a built in table with benches on each side for the dining room. We had a wringer washing machine in the kitchen and mom hung the clothes out on the clothes line. There was a dirt alley and chicken running around and the most beautiful morning glories ever!!
Susie was always sticking the red berries that grew on the bushes out in front of our duplex up her nose and forever swallowing the nickels we were given while we waited on the ice cream truck!!! We loved to go to Don Jose's Mexican Restaurant, we usually walked there, that was always a treat as money was tight. It was always fun waiting on the ice man, when he would go in the house to put the ice in the ice box we would run to the truck and pick up chunks of ice that had fallen off the truck.
We were Episcopalians, however there was no Episcopal Church close so Susie and I went to the Asbury United Methodist Church, most Sundays we would go there with our neighbors Irene and Karen Lee Brown, walking...in fact one of the last things mom said to me before she died was "make sure that you hold Susie's hand when you cross the street to go to church."
that was in May of 1959, I was 19 and Susie was 15.....we hadn't lived near that church since 1950.
I Love you Susie, I miss sharing our precious sister memories...miss you
