Wayne, the son of Wayne C. Anderson and Betty H. Anderson of Bettendorf IA enlisted in the US Navy on November 3, 1967 in Des Moines IA. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned as a Medical Corpsman to H&S Company, attached to Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines (Rein) FMF on June 20, 1970.

The men of Company B were setting up a defensive position north of the Hoa My village complex in Que Son District when HM3 Anderson tripped a pressure activated SFD (Secondary Firing Device) believed to be either a 250 or 500 lb. bomb setting off a massive explosion. Ten Marines were wounded and HM3 Anderson was instantly killed as a result of multiple fragmentation and blast wounds by the hostile explosive device.
