U.S. Congressman, New Hampshire Governor. He graduated from Dartmouth College, in 1789, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Keene, New Hampshire. In 1811, he was elected as a Republican to the Twelfth Congress, serving until 1813. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was the judge of probate of Cheshire County New Hampshire, (1823-31) and a member of the commission to establish the boundary line between the States of New Hampshire and Massachusetts in 1825. In 1831, he was elected as a Republican the 14th Governor of New Hampshire, serving until 1833. After his term, he retired from political life and served as the first president of the Ashuelot Bank Keene, New Hampshire, until his death at age 68. His son Samuel Dinsmoor Jr. was the 22nd New Hampshire Governor.
