On September 12, 1828, in their homeland of Germany, John and Elizabeth Knecht were united in marriage.
On arriving in this country they immediately proceeded to Chillicothe, Ohio where they resided eight months. They then moved to Connersville, Indiana where they resided nine months. In 1850, John purchased the land from which his present farm has been developed in Mount Pleasant Township, southeast of Yorktown and has since been one of the most industrious and respected citizens of the community, in the substantial growth of which he has taken such an active part.
On coming to this county, Mr. Griesheimer found his purchase in a very primitive condition, the county being covered with a dense forest growth and game of all kind being very plentiful. He has labored hard to accumulate a competency, which he is now enjoying in his declining years, having retired from active life.
Mr. and Mrs. Griesheimer are members of the Reformed Lutheran Church, and are known far and wide as devout christian people. Their greatest pleasure now is taken in the Scriptures, and they can daily be seen reading the old Bible which has been in their family for five generations. This worthy old couple celebrated the anniversary of their golden wedding in 1878, which occasion was one of great joy to them, there being present over 100 invited guests. Mrs Griesheimer is a remarkably well preserved woman for her years, and is still able to attend to a large share of the household duties, reads without the aid of glasses and is noted for her wonderful memory.
The long years which these worthy people have passed in each other's society have only served to cement the bonds with which they are united, and as hand in hand they go onward toward twilight and the journey's end they present a pleasing picture, which all their friends unite in wishing may never fade.
Elizabeth died at home on August 11, 1895 at the age of 88 years. John died at home on August 31, 1896 at the age of 89 years.
John and Elizabeth were the parents of nine children: Catherine M. Wegerle, John W. Griesheimer, Elizabeth Feldpush, Mary Hofherr, Wilhelmina Raible, Christina Singel, Anna Margaret Bishop, Eva M. Jones and Sarah A. Zeigler.
