Verna M. Creed, formerly of Peekskill passed away on Jan. 26, 2008 in McLean, Virginia. She was 96.

Creed was born in Kingsville, Ontario, Canada on February 9, 1911. She grew up in Toronto, where she received a BA degree from the University of Toronto in 1934 and she held a Master's Degree in Library Science.

She married George J. Creed, Jr. on November 22, 1940.They had two sons, George and Barton. Bart, an A-7E pilot, was shot down over Laos on March 13, 1971 and was declared missing.

Creed worked in the Peekskill Military Academy and St. Peter's School libraries before becoming Head Librarian of The Field Library in Peekskill, where she oversaw the move from South Street to its current location. She retired in 1979. Her husband, George, was one of the owners of Creed Brothers Lumber Co. Verna was an avid musician and had been a member of the Peekskill Presbyterian Church Choir.

In 1979, Verna and George moved to Port Charlotte, Florida. After her husband passed away in 1989, Verna stayed in Florida until she moved to McLean to be closer to her family in Vienna, Virginia. She is survived by her son, George, three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 19 at Hillside Cemetery, 1033 Oregon Road, Cortlandt Manor. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to E.O. Curry Funeral Home, Peekskill.
