U.S. Senator, Rhode Island Governor. He graduated from Brown University Rhode Island, in 1808, studied law, admitted to the bar but never practiced law. He was a member Rhode Island State House of Representatives, (1821-29) and a member of the Rhode Island Senate, in 1831. In 1833, he was elected as a Whig the 13th Governor of Rhode Island, serving until 1838. While he was in office, a new banking law was enacted, a bill passed giving brokers the authority to sell foreign and domestic lottery tickets and the Rhode Island militia was recognized. After his final term, he was elected as a Law and Order candidate to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Sprague, serving (1844-45). Not a candidate for reelection, he was a member of Rhode Island Senate, (1845-56). He then retired from public life and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death at age 73.
